Today's Reading: Romans 14:11-23
What might make you uncomfortable:
There is no room for selfishness in the Kingdom of God. Jesus came to serve!Today's Devotional:
Love Killer #3: Selfishness:
In the midst of his discussion on doctrinal gray areas, Paul shifts the discourse to the topic of selfishness.
The context of Paul's comments the clean-ness of food. Because the Roman Church consisted of both Jewish and Gentile believers, disputes about the diets required by Jewish law were prevalent.
In the midst of his commentary, Paul says "It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall" (14:21).
When we as Christians take privilege in the gray areas of life we must be careful that our own decisions are not damaging the faith of others. We do not live in a vacuum - our own areas of license have the ability to cause our Christian brothers and sisters to sin.
At the root of these issues are selfishness. Selfishness says "I can do what I want - deal with it." This attitude is outside of love.
